Breast Reconstruction

Today's advances in plastic surgery have resulted in a variety of procedure options with excellent restorative results for women facing mastectomy. Many women decide to have their reconstruction done at the same time of as the mastectomy, while other women prefer to wait months or even years until they are ready.

There are different approaches to reconstruction that vary depending on type of mastectomy, the condition of the breast skin, your general health and body build, and your preferences.

TRAM flap (Autologous reconstruction)
This method of surgically reconstructing your breast is by taking spare tissue from your lower stomach area and move it to your chest. TRAM stands for transverse rectus addominus muscle, which is the muscle located between your chest and public bone.

Latissimus dorsi flap (autologous reconstruction)
In this procedure the latissimus dorsi muscle along with a section of skin and fat is transferred around the site under the skin to the breast area. The tissue is contoured into a natural breast shape and sewn into place. This procedure is a good option for women with small to medium sized breasts. This procedure produces excellent results with few complications.

Breast Implants and Expanders
This is a particularly good option for slim, small to medium breasted women who need to return to everyday activities as soon as possible.

For most women choosing the breast implant option, the skin that remains after mastectomy is stretched or expanded to make room for an implant.
