Chemical Peel

Did you know that chemical peels date back to ancient Egypt? Sour milk baths (lactic acid) were used to soothe the skin. An explosion of interest in peels occurred from the 1960’s - 1980’s, and that interest has continued to grow and develop.

A chemical peel is a non-invasive procedure used in the Carey MediSpa. It involves the application of a chemical exfoliant for the removal of superficial lesions such as acne or dark spots, to improve the texture of the skin, and to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The level of penetration depends on the type and strength of agent used. The depth is classified as superficial, medium, and deep.

The most commonly used agents are:

  • TCA, Glycolic, Lactic, and Jessners – Traditional peeling agents to treat sundamage, mild wrinkles, blotchiness and pigmentation, for more youthful skin.
  • Salicylic – for the treatment of acne.
  • The VI peel - A blended peel that almost anyone can benefit from. It is a new generation peel that yields superior results with comfort and convenience. The VI peel will improve the tone, texture and clarity of the skin, reduce or eliminate dark spots, soften lines and wrinkles, stimulate collagen and elastin production for firmer skin, and clear acne conditions. The treatment takes only 20 minutes and is highly effective.
  • The Obagi Blue Peel – A medium depth peel for a smoother texture, even tone, and fresher, younger looking skin. There is usually about a week of downtime involved.
  • A laser procedure by Dr. Carey can also be used in place of chemical peels in many cases.

Careful skin analysis and technician experience is imperative for optimal results. We maintain the highest standards in both of these. Our analysis includes the use of a skin scanner that allows us to visualize what is not visible to the naked eye. Much depends on skin color, thickness, and condition. Dr. Carey and our registered nurses choose the type that is just right for you.
