Looking for Better Skin? Consider Laser Treatment By Cindy Carey, R.N. , B.S.N., and Asher Carey, M.D., F.A.C.S. Lasers are playing an increasingly important role in anesthetic treatments. Most Medispas are offering a variety of laser treatment options for skin problems and new applications are being developed almost daily. Nearly everyone has heard of lasers, but many are not sure how they work. The concept is relatively straightforward, with each laser producing a specific wave length of light (heat). This concentrated light penetrates the skin in a specified area. The advantage of using a laser is the treatment area can be precisely targeted with maximum safety and minimal involvement of the surrounding tissues. Lasers are constantly being improved, to make them even safer and more comfortable for patients. The earliest lasers developed for medical use removed the surface layer of the skin. The Erbium laser is commonly used today for laser resurfacing or laser peels which can be safely and quickly performed in our Medispa, using a topical anesthetic. Laser resurfacing is used to treat sun damaged skin, pigmented areas, old age spots, wrinkles, and scars including acne scars. One of the most common uses of the Erbium laser is for wrinkles around the mouth and the eyes. About a 70% improvement can be seen after the first treatment. . The Erbium laser is flexible and can also be applied very lightly to accomplish a superficial peel without breaking the skin. For most pigment problems or sun damaged skin, this is ideal and there is no healing time. Deeper treatments can be done to improve wrinkles and acne scars. The healing time is 4 to 10 days, and most patients are back to work and in makeup make up in less than one week. Erbium laser resurfacing offers less discomfort and postoperative complications, and results in a skin that is tighter, smoother, and more elastic. Men and women looking for hair removal have two excellent laser options. The Gentlelase is extremely effective in removing brown and black hair from all parts of the body in both men and women, while the Gentleyag laser is used for hair removal and has the unique advantage of being able to safely treat all skin colors. The number of treatments varies from person to person but on average, four to six treatments are scheduled 4 weeks apart. Each session is rapid, without any down time and minimal discomfort. In most patients, laser hair removal is permanent and eliminates 90% of the hair treated. Men frequently choose hair removal of the chest and back. Women most frequently choose treatment of facial hair, eyebrows, underarms, bikini line and legs. The Gentleyag laser is also very effective in treating spider veins on the face and legs. Unsightly blood vessels can be minimized or eliminated through a series of two to three treatments and is permanent. Women are particularly pleased with how much smoother the skin of the legs look without unsightly spider veins. Men seek treatment of spider veins on the side of the nose and cheeks. There is no downtime and no bandages, and after treatment, one can immediately return to work and normal activities. You may have heard how lasers can tighten the skin without any healing downtime. This is referred to as non-ablative laser treatments or lunchtime peels, since it does not break the skin. This results in tighter skin with less wrinkles and a better overall complexion. The Gentleyag is used for the face for patient's who desire a mild to moderate improvement but would like to avoid the healing time necessary for an operation or laser resurfacing. The treatments are rapid using a topical anesthetic for the face. This new technique is also being investigated as a means of tighten skin on the thigh and breast area. Lasers fill an increasingly important role in Medispa anesthetic treatments. Use of lasers as the primary treatment for skin problems has been the most frequent use to date. However, using a combination of laser treatments in addition to cosmetic surgery, Botox injections, and medical fillers is becoming much more common. For those desiring smoother, healthier skin with less hair, wrinkles, acne scars, or spider veins, the answer is a few Medispa visits away.
